Asking a Lot

One day I need to ask a pro about shooting team roping.  This is about the only location in the arena you can get the angle you need for both ropers to be in the shot (if you're lucky).  But they're so far apart you're asking a lot out of an aperture of F2.8.  Even with a relatively short focal length, there's not much depth of field to work with.
