Descent Into Darkness -- Day One

I'm doing this for me -- not you.  I don't care if you read along or not.  Comment or not.  Really, I don't care.

(from the New York Times)

So this is who we are now.  From the looks of it,  Donald Trump is going to take every, single swing state.  East, West, North, South.

A lout.  A know-nothing.  A man held liable for sexual assault and convicted of 34 felonies.  He will be sentenced for those felonies in 20 days.

The dozens of questions I have will be answered in due course.  Joe Biden still has 2 months and some 15 odd days as President.  I'm sure something will happen.  But I have no idea what.  Will Kamala Harris certify Trump's election?  I'd bet yes.  Will Joe Biden do something rash and exercise the immunity the Supreme Court has given him?  I doubt it.  But if he does do something, it won't be rash.  So many balls in the air....

That giant "whoosh" you hear is Federal employees headed for the door.  They aren't stupid.  Those eligible for retirement will stampede the exits.  Those that aren't will hunker down and hope to survive the purge.  I'm glad I'm not in their shoes.

Speaking of heading for the exits...I wonder where most Americans will run?  Canada?  Spain?  The United Kingdom?  Wherever most are thinking, I bet it's not as easy as they think.  And I bet most don't know that much of the world (Italy, the UK, Germany) feel about immigrants like Trumpers do.  I guess they'll hope that white privilege extends overseas.  (No, that doesn't sound racist at all.  Keep telling yourself that.)  They could try Rwanda.  Tell them Rishi Sunack recommended them.

Me and my snide little comments.  I really must learn to control myself.  I was leaving the County Commission meeting today and -- after watching more ARPA money being handed out (because they're running out of time) -- I asked a group of deputies guarding the courthouse if the word ARPA meant anything to them.  Nope.  Alas.  The trouble with being a public policy nerd.  ARPA paid for $5.5 million worth of their overtime during the pandemic but there's mo reason they should know that.  Or that not a single Republican that represents them voted for it.

"The Senate voted 51–50 to advance the relief bill and allow debates to begin, with Harris casting the tie-breaking vote."

But it is not necessary to know that to cast a vote for President in the United States of America.  Even the 20 (30?)-something-year-old that helped me unload the stage from the Democratic watch party last night gets to vote.  Even if he does believe that Arabs don't respect women and that would guarantee us a war if we elected a woman President.

This is who we are now.  I'm going to pour a drink and watch America descend into darkness.  If you ever decide you've had enough and would like to light a candle -- I'm here.  Remember, even the smallest light can hold back the darkness.
