The Stars of the Show
The attraction is the thousands of sandhill cranes that visit Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge every winter. But the stars of the show are the whooping cranes that hang out with them. They dwindled down to about 20 at the start of World War II. Now they are approaching 1,000. Total. In the world. You can see 1,000 sandhill cranes in less than an hour at Wheeler. It's near Decatur, Alabama if you ever want to visit. I understand they start leaving in February.
