Rocks and Roots

Monte Sano Mountain (seems redundant to me) is nothing but rocks and roots — even if you are talking about a creek.  Here, Fagan Creek spills over a couple of rock shelves on the west side of Monte Sano.  You can get here on the Wildflower Trail, on the Land Trust of Northern Alabama's property.

I've never hiked terrain like this before.  The creek flows over solid sheets of rock with very little sediment visible.  The water is crystal clear. What trees are able to find a foothold in the rock are undercut by the creek and fall over it at regular intervals.  I'm pretty sure I'll have to come back in the spring — snakes or no snakes.
