Go Back With a Map
I took a day off yesterday and went to the Bankhead National Forest. It's just over an hour southwest of Huntsville. (Moulton, AL is the closest town to where I was.) I knew I shouldn't go without a paper map but I was exploring — being my first trip there. I printed out a small map of the places I wanted to visit but...off I went without a proper map.
I found the Sipsey River Picnic Area without any trouble. Interesting thing about that place. There isn't a trail marker anywhere. I saw a little wooden plaque about 6 x 8 inches big with "200" and "209" on it. That was it.
I'd tell you where this is but I don't know. Up river is all I can tell you. I don't even know the name of it.
The Sipsey cuts through limestone to make a canyon. Water falls into from all directions. And that is the main attraction — waterfalls. While there wasn't much water falling over this one, a tree had fallen into the stream. And because it was below freezing, icicles had formed all over it. I'd guess this cliff is around 80-100 feet high.
It's a wild-looking place. I'll have to go back. With a map.
