Great Blue in Winter

My editor (aka my wife) likes this one best. I spent about an hour photographing a great blue heron standing in the early morning sunshine. It finally decided to fly to the other side of the lake.

For the learners, this is 1 frame out of 492 for the morning. The camera is on autofocus because I can't see anymore. The exposure is manual. If I'd known it was going to fly, I might have used auto exposure. But I was busy bracketing my exposures when it took off. I knew the exposure I had dialed in would be decent. I just didn't know how long into its flight it would last — the bird was flying towards the Sun and I was swiveling to the right. Yes, I was using a tripod — with a gimbal head.
