Bluebells Are In Bloom
If you're lucky enough to live near Huntsville, Alabama (or just visiting), the bluebells are in bloom. As I understand it, they only stick around for a couple of weeks.
The area is the most obvious microclimate I've ever seen. You're walking through the woods that are almost completely brown, with very few plants starting to sprout when you crest this little hill on the trail…
Suddenly there is an acre of green. With the prettiest pink and blue blooms you've ever seen. It really is quite a sight.
You can find the spot about mid-way on the Sinks Trail. Be advised, the Sinks Trail is truth in advertising. You start at the top of the mountain and you travel all the way down to the sink where you find the bluebells. I hate that trail. It is steep and usually muddy in places.
I take the Mountain Mist Trail in. From the street parking on Bankhead Parkway, take the paved Bankhead Trail 1/4 mile up until the Mountain Mist Trail. Go left on the Mountain Mist. It will meet the Sinks Trail in 1/2 mile. Go left. In another 1/2 mile or so you'll see the bluebells. For a landmark, the big dead tree that forms an arch over the trail is about halfway from the trail intersection to the bluebells. 1 mile (or so) in. 1 mile back out. All the trails in Monte Sano are rocky, with water seeping out from all sorts of places.
