Mud Creek Public Boat Ramp
I had to drive to Atlanta Tuesday so I used Google Maps to scout some sunrise locations along the way. I tried the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School Overlook in Grant, AL but that was a bust. It looks more North than East. So I drove on to the Mud Creek Public Boat Ramp, just off U.S. 72 NE of Scottsboro. I think I'm going to like that place.
As you can see, the Sun rises right is a gap between bigger mountains (at least during this time of year) and there are a number of other things to work with. Trees, water, boats, a dock, etc. Unfortunately, it's the better part of an hour from Huntsville -- but it's still doable.
And while I'm here, I stopped by Weathington Park for the sunset on my way back. The view is always impressive but it didn't photograph well — at sunset this time of year. I've seen some great photographs from there so I know it has potential. I'm mentioning this mostly because the powers that be have built two observation decks at the park. I'm not crazy about them but if I was in a wheelchair I probably would be.
