Karst in Fog

Karst is the topography of Monte Sano and most of the surrounding area.  It is limestone mountains worn by plants and water.  This land is very different from the land I grew up with in Georgia.  The biggest difference here, on this mountain, is the amount of exposed rock, fallen trees and the lack of pine trees.

I took this picture yesterday, as I was walking up the Bankhead Trail in the fog. You can get a better sense of this land in winter, when most of the undergrowth dies back.  In the summer, it turns into a rocky, subtropical jungle.
