Karst is Confusion

The topography of Monte Sano (and North Alabama) is defined as karst.  From Wikipedia: "Karst is a topography formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks such as limestone, dolomite, and gypsum."

I keep trying to take a picture that epitomizes the area but I'm not sure I can do it. It's like taking a picture of the forest — trees are always getting in the way.  I know some people that do it well.  I am not one of those people.

Anyway, I can't get a picture where you can get a feel for the landscape except in oddball forest openings.  That's usually a man-made trail.  But he's a natural opening.  The bare rock is the dry creek bed of Feagan Creek.  (Otherwise, the plants would have taken it over too.)  This view is in winter.  You can imagine how restricted your view would be if the forest was leafed out, as in summer.
