The Edge of Town

The lights of the south side of Huntsville, Alabama stop abruptly at the Blevins Gap Nature Preserve boundary (lower left side).  

I think the Land Trust of Northern Alabama might be Huntsville's secret weapon.  It has managed to preserve a tremendous amount of natural space around Huntsville — including several mountain tops.  You'll see some hills full of trophy houses (including the west side of Monte Sano) but many hillsides don't have any lights.  It makes all the difference in the world as far as beauty.   Seriously, if you ever have the chance to drive through Huntsville, compare the hills around the city with, say, Chattanooga.

By the way, I'm posting this picture from December 21st because I just found it on the 2nd memory card of my camera.  I forgot to put the 1st card back in the camera this morning (and the spare battery too), so everything from this morning went to the card in the 2nd slot.
