Almost Interesting

It was almost interesting this morning.  That's "almost" by today's standards.  Have you read Megan Garber's piece in "The Atlantic" yet?  Let me steal some of her words, scramble them up a little and you tell me if they fit.

"Instagram users...post their own touched-up, filtered story for others to consume."

"We've become so accustomed to its heightened atmosphere that the plain old real version of things starts to seem dull by comparison."

"But each invitation to be entertained reinforces an impulse: to seek diversion whenever possible, to avoid tedium at all costs, to privilege the dramatized version of events over the actual one."

This is just a simple picture of this morning's events.  It was interesting enough to experience it.  It was a once in a lifetime event — in the way that each day of ordinary life is — but it was not a once-in-a-lifetime picture.

Imagine if I was able to produce a once-in-a-lifetime picture every single day.  I suspect it would be about as healthy as eating nothing but my favorite desserts at every meal.  And, sooner or later, we'd crave a simple piece of toast, baked potato or salad.

Anyway, I'd encourage you to read the article. It will lead you to some surprising places.
